Fancy Shmancy

This weekend we got to go to the Family Counseling Center's 100 year anniversary Gala for Nathan's work. It's a charity his work contrubutes to so there was a special table just for Salt Lake Legal. Even though I was felling pretty sick, I was so excited to dress up all fancy and eat really good food!
This is the only picture we got. Which is a shame because I am obsessed with the new black, lacy dress I am wearing. But we felt lame snapping pictures at the gala. We had to pretend we were fancy!
We got there towards the end of the cocktail and silent auction hour. We decided to skip it because 1) We're poor  2) We're Mormon. But turns out they were also serving cider. Hahahaha I love Utah.

When we were taken to our tables, our salads were already there and you guys, it was the most beautiful salad I have ever seen. It was all wrapped up in a bowls made from lettuce leaves. The salad was it's own bowl. I am not even a huge salad person but the dressing they had was freaking amazing. We ate and talked with Nathan's co-workers while some classical band played way too loud. Also, we had three glasses each. (Apparently one was for water, one was for wine, and one was for a different beverage of our choice) We also had so much silverware, I had no idea how I was going to use it all. Think of all the dishes to do after! The rich people make things harder. I just wanted to grab one fork, knife, and spoon, hand the rest back and say, "I'm good, thanks!"

After that they brought out the main course and I died. Mushroom stuffed chicken wrapped in bacon with aspargus and the most delicious rice I have ever tasted in my life. YOU GUYS. THIS RICE WAS SO GOOD. Maybe it's because I am a crazy pregnant lady but I could eat that rice every day for the rest of my life and always be satisfied. I don't know what was in it, but it was like crack. The bacon didn't sit well in my stomach but Nathan finished of my plate and then practically licked his own clean. He grabbed a roll and soaked up every ounce of that rice sauce. BECAUSE IT WAS THAT GOOD!!!!

We had these super yummy chocolate and custard things for dessert (again, Nathan finished mine and his) as well as mini boxes of chocolates for each of us while a few people spoke. Then a pianist named Kurt Bestor came and performed. I had never heard of him, but the program says he has won a bunch of Emmy's so that's pretty legit. Then a few more people spoke about the agency and then about Elizabeth Smart, who was the guest of honor that night.

Side story about Elizabeth. Summer of 2009 I was taking a very small religion class at BYU. There were 7 of us in the class and we all sat around 1 table. On the first day a girl came walking in late and she immediately looked familiar to me but I couldn't figure out why. She came in and sat next to the teacher and he asked her name. She said Elizabeth and smiled. He then asked for her last name and she immediately looked kinda worried. She lowered her voice so I listened extra hard and said, "Smart." You guys, I freaked out inside. I was going to spend the entire summer in a small classroom with Elizabeth Smart!! I thought she would be weird but she was amazing! So normal and so kind and so outgoing. No one ever let them know we knew who she was although she knew we knew. She never shared anything too personal and I got to know her somewhat. But the summer ended. And so did our best-friendship. But I was so excited to see her speak! She is such an inspiring person with such an inspiring story.

She spoke and I cried. It was amazing. She is so down-to-earth and so grateful for all she has. I love when she spoke about forgiving the terrible people who kidnapped and raped her for 9 months. I love that she said the best revenge she could ever give to them was being happy, so that's what she decided to do. She said they took 9 months of her life, but she would never give them a second more. It humbled me so much as I thought of my own trials and how little they seemed in compassion. She is really amazing.

The night ended with more music and some dancing and then we headed home. We got into our little corolla and didn't fell as fancy anymore. But I've decided that many forks is too fancy for me.
That rice though, that's probably the perfect amount of fanciness.
